Surigao Sur farmers learn coffee jam technology

TAGBINA, Surigao del Sur — The municipality of Tagbina, celebrated as the “Land of Aroma,” marked a milestone in its flourishing coffee industry with the recent culmination of the project “Empowering Communities in Surigao del Sur through Technology Transfer and Adoption of Publicly-Funded R&D Outputs.”
Special Program Division chief Glenn Lazaro shared that the project highlighted the jam technology participated by the coffee farmers entitled, “Empowering the Coffee Farmer/Processor Community in Tagbina with Coffee Jam Technology,” a collaborative effort among the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Caraga, the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) of Surigao del Sur, North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU), the Local Government Unit of Tagbina, and the San Nicolas Development Cooperative (SANIDECO).
Revolutionizing
coffee production
This initiative empowered the local
coffee farmers and processors by equipping them with innovative technology for
coffee jam production. Developed by researchers from NEMSU – Tagbina campus,
the technology enhanced the value addition and productivity in the local coffee
industry, enabling farmers to diversify their products and improve economic
opportunities.

The LGU of Tagbina emphasized the
municipality’s commitment to advancing local innovation and fostering
collaboration.
“This project highlights the strength
of partnerships in driving development and innovation,” Mayor Glaiza Jane
Polizon-Lanete said, reiterating her administration’s dedication to improving
the livelihood of farmers while solidifying Tagbina’s status as a center for
aromatic coffee production.

The project not only promotes
technology adoption but also builds the skills and knowledge of farmers and
processors in the community. By enhancing the quality of coffee-based products,
such as coffee jam, the initiative provides opportunities for market expansion
and increased income for local producers.
