BUTUAN CITY -- As part of its efforts to enhance local industries through science and technology, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Caraga concluded the five-day advanced handloom weaving training under the InnoWeave Project on December 13.

The program equipped the participants with innovative skills and techniques to enrich their craft while preserving cultural heritage.

Held from December 9–13, the training brought together local weavers from barangays Kauswagan and Sinai, representatives from the Municipal Tourism Office (MTO), and teachers from Sibagat National High School.

Expert resource speakers from the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST - PTRI) shared the science behind weaving and practical techniques to elevate the artistry and efficiency of local weavers.

Conducted in active partnership with the local government unit (LGU) of Sibagat, the training concluded with a closing ceremony attended by Vice Mayor Maria Liza Evangelista.

Vice Mayor Evangelista commended the initiative, highlighting its capacity to boost economic opportunities for the town and the synergy between government and non-government sectors.

"This collaboration aims to transform Sibagat into a hub for high-quality woven products, showcasing local resources while embracing innovation," said Evangelista.

Assistant Regional Director for Field Operations Ricardo N. Varela of DOST Caraga also attended the event, expressing optimism about the project's potential to improve the livelihoods of weavers and foster a culture of innovation in the municipality.
