Natividad: A century of love, resilience; legacy in Sta. Josefa
In Barangay San Jose, Sta. Josefa, Agusan del Sur, lives a woman whose century-long journey has witnessed history unfold before her.
Nanay Natividad, 100-year-old, recently received the Centenarian cash gift from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga.
Her early life revolved around farming, a humble living that sustained her family. Alongside her husband, they ploughed and planted lands with their hands to provide for their seven children.
When her husband passed away, Nanay Natividad, though grieving, remained a source of strength for her children, ensuring that love and care continued to bind the family together.
At the age of 80, when many would have chosen to rest, she could still be found making "pilipit" or "shakoy"—a delightful deep-fried flour snack covered in white sugar. She would go around their barangay and nearby sitios to sell them. Many people recognized Nanay Natividad for that. It was only at the age of 86 that she finally decided to hang up her apron, acknowledging that her body could no longer keep pace with her boundless energy.
Her hands, though no longer kneading dough, still reached out in love. Natividad became a recipient of the Social Pension Program, a small but much-needed support from the DSWD, which helped provide for her in her later years.
Today, Nanay Natividad lives with her youngest daughter, Lhurielyn, who proudly says that her mother has "the kindest heart, a friend to all, enemy to no one, and the best mother to her children."
"Inosente gyud kaayo akong Nanay, no read, no write, pero buotan kaayo na siya. Nidako mi nga wala gyuy panag-bangi sa mga igsuon tungod kay tungod maayo kaayo among Nanay sa amoa, maayo sad mi sa usa'g usa (My mother is really innocent, she can't read or write, but she is very kind. We grew up without any sibling rivalry because our mother treated us so well, and we treat each other well, too),"
Lhurielyn’s words paint a picture of a woman whose life has not only spanned a century but whose heart has touched many lives. Known in her community as a friend to all and a woman of kindness, Nanay Natividad has left a mark on the people around her. As a mother, she nurtured her children with love, teaching them the value of family and hard work. As a member of her community, she shared her warmth and generosity, becoming a cherished person in Sta. Josefa.
Celebrating 100 years of Life
Celebrating her 100th birthday last September 9, 2024, the DSWD Field Office Caraga awarded her the Centenarian Cash Gift, Certificate of Recognition, and Felicitation Letter from the President of the Republic of the Philippines, as a recognition of the milestone she achieved. But more than the monetary gift, it was a celebration of the life she lived—a life that was defined by love, sacrifice, and resilience.
Her story is a beautiful reminder that the strength of a community is often rooted in the quiet lives of its members. Her legacy, carried on by her children and grandchildren, is one of love, perseverance, and kindness. As she continues to live surrounded by her loved ones, Nanay Natividad’s story serves as an inspiration, not just to her family, but to everyone in Sta. Josefa and now, Caraga.
Her century-long journey is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Filipino people—one that values family, hard work, and above all, a heart that remains open to love, even after 100 years. (DSWD Caraga/PIA-Caraga)
