MaluPET strengthens program in Surigao Norte with additional 3,200 QR codes

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- In a significant boost for pet welfare and responsible ownership in Surigao del Norte, the Provincial Research, Innovation, and Science Museum (PRISM) recently turned over  an additional 3,200 laser-engraved QR codes to the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Surigao Nickel.

The manufacturing of said QR codes is a collaborative effort between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the provincial government of Surigao del Norte that marked a critical expansion of the MaluPET program across the province's 14 municipalities.

To date, the MaluPET QR Program has achieved impressive milestones, with 923 pet owners and 1,880 pets registered. This growing database highlighted the community's commitment to safeguarding its beloved animals.

With the new batch of QR codes, the program is set to further extend its reach in municipalities including Sison, Alegria, Mainit, Tubod, Placer, Tagana-an, San Francisco, and Malimono.

The MaluPET QR Program aims to enhance pet safety by providing personalized QR tags containing crucial information about pets and their owners. When scanned, these QR codes facilitate the swift reunification of lost pets with their families, fostering a more compassionate and responsible community. The program has already seen remarkable success, with numerous pets safely returning to their owners.

The turnover ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Arturo Cruje of the Provincial Government Office – Education, Culture, and the Arts and DOST personnel led by Provincial Director Mariel P. Makinano were present alongside the members of JCI Surigao Nickel, led by 2024 LO President John Lester R. Fetalvero, MaluPET Program Chairperson Hasmer Salubre, and representatives from JJC Ironwood.

Looking ahead, JCI Surigao Nickel plans to expand the MaluPET program even further by exploring partnerships with veterinary clinics and other local government units to ensure that every pet in Surigao del Norte benefits from this initiative.

Upcoming community events and drives will continue to promote responsible pet ownership and raise awareness about the importance of pet safety.

The MaluPET QR Program exemplifies how innovative solutions can create a safer and more responsible environment for pets. Surigao del Norte is leading the way, showcasing the power of technology and community collaboration in enhancing the welfare of the furry companions. (DOST-Surigao del Norte/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
