VP Duterte joins launching of DepEd’s garden-to-table program in Bayugan City
AGUSAN DEL SUR -- Vice President Sara Duterte attended the launching of the Negosyo: Pampaaralang Taniman ng mga Agribida Garden-to-Table School Business model of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur on Wednesday, June 26, at the Lope A. Asis gymnasium.
She also visited Salvacion Central Elementary School in Barangay Salvacion as one of the pilot implementers of the program in Caraga region, to see the school’s Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP). The school is also engaged in livestock such as chickens, turkeys, goats, ducks and aquaculture by raising tilapia.
"Have you seen the model we've showcased for the garden-to-table program? We hope for a partnership with Go Negosyo. We want them to educate our Parents-Teachers Association on how to run businesses to increase the school's income and assist with feeding activities," the outgoing DepEd secretary stated.
"There are vast idle lands in our schools that can be utilized for business to boost the respective schools' budget," VP Duterte added.
According to the school administrator, Bayugan City Mayor Kirk Asis has been very supportive in implementing the program, including providing tilapia fingerlings, seeds, and livestock.
The business model of DepEd envisions establishing a self-sufficient school that integrates entrepreneurship and agriculture. It also focuses on teaching students about business concepts, sustainable agriculture, and healthy eating habits.
The launching of the program in Bayugan City was attended by the Schools Division Superintendents in the region led by DepEd Caraga Director Maria Ines Asuncion, along with teachers, parents, and stakeholders. (PPIO-Agusan del Sur/PIA-Agusan del Sur)
