DOT-13 conducts Homestay Pilipinas training in Siargao Island

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte (PIA) -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) Caraga, in partnership with the municipalities of San Isidro, Burgos, Pilar, and Sta. Monica in Siargao Island, conducted a training on Homestay Pilipinas from June 5 - 11.

During the 7-day training conducted by DOT-accredited resource speaker, Dr. Freddie Quinito, homestay operators learned the importance of guest satisfaction. They were also involved in practical sessions such as bed making, table napkin and towel folding to enhance homestay operations.

Other topics covered were the Philippine tourism industry, roles and responsibilities of a homestay keeper, legal requirements for operating a homestay, cleaning and sanitation processes, housekeeping procedures, and food and beverage services.

The Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE) was thoroughly discussed, highlighting the FBSE journey, the 7Ms (maka-Diyos, makatao, maka-kalikasan, makabansa, masayahin, may bayanihan, and may pag-asa) of Filipino core values, and the GUEST (greet, understand, explain, suggest, and thank) and HEART (hear them out, empathize, apologize, resolve the concern and thank the guest) techniques for handling visitors and tourists to ensure excellent service in homestay operations, including the iconic "Mabuhay" gesture.

The DOT Caraga accreditation unit also took the platform to inform and provide participants with an orientation on the requirements and application process for homestay accreditation.

As the first homestay training this year on the country’s surfing capital, this initiative is essential for equipping the accommodation sector in northern Siargao Island to welcome the growing number of tourists exploring the area.

In his closing message, Arche M. Perucho, SB member of San Isidro town, expressed hope that this training will positively impact homestay operations in the area.

The participants also had the chance to organize their association as homestay operators in the northern part of the island of Siargao. (DOT- Caraga/PIA- Surigao del Norte)
