Sen. Marcos urges students to love sports

Sen. Imee Marcos

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur -- "Let us learn to love sports, and make it part of our daily life."

This was the statement of Sen. Imee Marcos, as she attended the grand opening ceremonies of the Caraga Regional Athletic Games (CRAG) 2024, as the guest of honor.

According to Sen. Marcos, sport is like love. She said if you do not like it and if it is hard for you to sacrifice or to be hurt, then deny love, and also deny sport, further saying, ”That is why, our athletes are used to hardships, sacrifices and unity and willing to compete even by climbing mountains and compete the challenge that the world offers provided the will to win is determined by the heart.”

“Now here we are, at the finish line. Indeed, in the Caraga regional meet. We are here to celebrate your athletic prowess, and your months and years of hard training. It is a true pleasure to be back in the region. Let me say that in fact, I have been here every month. I was here last month to extend help with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). But we are here today because sports teach us lessons that we cannot learn entirely within the classroom. Discipline, sacrifice, teamwork, competition and leadership. These are lessons that are hard-fought, hard won and will take us through the rest of life,” the senator pointed out.

Marcos also admitted that politicians like her also learned lessons from the young athletes, that they also imbibed the spirit of unity, the willingness of the athletes to fight and to struggle fairly and finally to win and triumph. Seeing the athletes in their uniforms, she said she feels and sees all the athletes as winners.

Meanwhile, knowing that Agusan del Sur will be the host of CRAG 2024, then Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant Secretary (Asec.) Francis Cesar Bringas said in his talk that whenever he goes to a place where they will be the host for the first time, he is always guided by a saying that goes ‘you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.’

And since he was here in the province, he declared he does not only like it, but he loves it. He declared that it is a remarkable and brilliant hosting for the Agusan del Sur local government unit and the regional office of DepEd Caraga.

Asec. Bringas

Asec. Bringas also expressed his excitement that after a couple of years of preparation, Agusan del Sur has become the host of the regional palaro which he said is something that some people would say, years ago, was not possible.  The education official pointed out that the present event proved that the province is ready for a bigger stage of sporting events, not only for the region but for the national level.

He also added that the Palarong Pambansa is going to be the opportunity for the best athletes of Caraga to earn a ticket to represent not only the region, but their divisions, their schools, their families and themselves in the biggest sports events someday.

CRAG 2024 took place at the Datu Lipus Makapandong Gov. D. O. Plaza Sports Complex in Patin-ay, Prosperidad from May 5-10. (David M. Suyao, PAMRE, PPIO-Agusan del Sur/ PIA-Agusan del Sur)
