Surigao port office conducts street, coastal cleanup

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- The Port Management Office of Surigao of the Philippine Ports Authority upheld its unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship by organizing a quarterly street and coastal clean-up activity at the port of Surigao.

The said activity also embodied the support of the PMO to the “Circular Actions for Climate Hope” of the DENR-EMB in celebration of the Environmental Awareness Month, National Clean Air Month and Climate Change Consciousness Week for this month of November 2023. PMO Surigao was a recent awardee of the 2023 Green Port Award System (GPAS) of the APEC Port Services Network (APSN) showcasing its rigorous efforts in environmental protection initiatives.

Leading the cause, various stakeholders vigorously participated in the event including in the port of Lipata, as well as the port community shipping lines, Global Port Surigao Terminal Inc., dockworkers, security guards, Philippine Navy reservists and the Surigao City Nickel Eagles Club. With a shared objective to protect and preserve the environment, volunteers cleared the area of waste and debris and helped educate the nearby community by inviting them to get involved in the said cause.

Together they managed to collect a total of six sacks of various ecological solid waste such as wood, leaves, plastic bottles, single use plastic and other residual waste. Each sack was meticulously sorted and appropriately disposed of, ensuring that the impact on the environment was minimized.

Under the Republic Act No. 9512, series of 2008, November is celebrated as Environmental Awareness Month, and under Presidential Proclamation No. 1667, series of 2008 also known as the Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week is celebrated every November 19 to 25.
