Council evaluates nutrition performance in AgSur

By Jennifer P. Gaitano

BUTUAN CITY – Determined to eradicate malnutrition cases in the region which is prevalent in the Indigenous Peoples (IP) community, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Caraga evaluates the barangays in the province of Agusan del Sur in the conduct of productive and healthy activities that combat malnutrition in the families.

Led by the NNC, the members of the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) composed of representatives from the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Caraga and Provincial Nutrition Evaluation Team (PNET) Agusan del Sur, visited the barangays in the province of Agusan del Sur, met with the officials and barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), and discussed with them the strategies on how to keep the locals healthy and with strong immune system against illnesses.

This initiative also forms part of the Search for Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar, wherein Barangay Violanta in the municipality of Loreto in Agusan del Sur is one of the contenders. The Manobo tribe residing in the area was grateful for the community visit and inspection of the NNC team.

On the other hand, the regional and provincial evaluators were surprised to see the cleanliness and tranquility of the said barangay contender. The locals were very hospitable including the warm welcome that was showed by the children.

Despite connectivity and communication struggle in Barangay Violanta, the kids are able to enjoy their childhood and have appreciated and preserved the traditional games as their past time.

“Along with the evaluation, we will be looking into the planning and coordination, advocacy and promotion, and intervention. And we hope that you will continue to work hand-in-hand to maintain and sustain your efforts and activities for the benefit of everyone,” said Dr. NiΓ±o Archie Labordo, regional nutrition program coordinator of NNC Caraga.

Punong barangay Teodoro Velez also expressed his gratitude to all the members of the Caraga RNET and PNET Agusan del Sur, and vowed to implement all the relevant suggestions of the evaluation team to their barangay to intensify the campaign against malnutrition.

Meanwhile, the same team also visited the municipality of Rosario, Agusan del Sur, that also got a high performance rating in the implementation of nutrition programs and services, as well as best practices in the province. (JPG/PIA-Agusan del Sur)
