Over 3k Surigao Norte farmers, fisherfolk get P11.9M TUPAD salaries

BUTUAN CITY -- The Department of Labor and Employment Surigao del Norte Field Office (DOLE SDNFO) conducted a cash payout to 3,410 beneficiaries of Tulong Panghanapbuhay para sa Ating Displaced/Disadvantage Workers (TUPAD) on the first half of March this year.

A total of 1,400 beneficiaries from the municipalities of San Francisco, Mainit, Gigaquit, Tubod, and the City of Surigao in the province's second district, and 2,010 beneficiaries from the municipality of Socorro from the first district received P3,500 each on March 6 to 8 and March 17 to 18, respectively. The TUPAD beneficiaries received a total of P11,931,500 from SDNFO for the 10-day emergency work they completed which included declogging canals, cleaning up the coast, and other community projects.

The TUPAD beneficiaries are mostly fishermen and farmers whose livelihood was greatly affected by flash floods and heavy rains caused by the series of low pressure areas (LPAs) that hit the province during the first quarter of this year.

“Mapasalamaton ako sa DOLE tungod kay ini na kwarta dako kaayo nga tabang sa ako nga usa ka mananagat. Salamat karajaw sa TUPAD nga programa, naa na kami pamalit ug bugas labi na kuman kay sige nag uyan (I'm grateful to DOLE for the money which is a huge help for me as a fisherman. Thank you for the TUPAD program, we can now buy rice)," said Harold Coniato, a TUPAD beneficiary from Socorro.

“Isip usa ka maguuma, salamat TUPAD og DOLE sa amo grasya. Dako sa ini nga tabang sa amoa (As a farmer, I'm thankful for the TUPAD and to DOLE for the blessings. This is a huge help for us),” said Clarito Banacia from San Francisco town.

TUPAD is a community-based package of aid from DOLE that offers temporary employment to seasonal, underemployed, and displaced workers. This is a program of the government that provides immediate intervention during disasters. (DOLE-SDN/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
