Over P48k imported fake cigarettes siezed in Surigao Norte town

BUTUAN CITY -- Alleged imported fake cigarettes worth around P48,000 were seized by local police authorities in Mainit town on Saturday, Feb. 25, and arrested a peddler from Agusan del Sur province.

Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Office (SDNPPO) Director Laudemer M. Laude identified the suspect as Jessie Gimang Villarmino from Purok-3, Barangay Kapatungan of Trento, Agusan del Sur.

Mainit police received a call from a concerned citizen reporting an individual peddling cigarettes within the area in Purok Lily, Barangay San Isidro in Mainit town.

When the police arrived at the reported location, they immediately verified the cigarettes being sold. The seller was not able to provide documents that it can be sold safely.

The police confiscated a unit of Honda TMX155 motorcycle with plate no. MR4726; 26 reams of Cannon Menthol cigarettes; 25 reams of New Orleans cigarettes; 23 reams of President cigarettes; and 48 reams of New Berlin cigarettes.

Based on the report of Mainit MPS, the suspect revealed that he took the products from Trento town in Agusan del Sur. He had been in Mainit for many days already to sell cigarettes.

"The Surigaonon police is committed to implementing operations against illegal activities in our province and continues to partner with the community to hold those accountable. I encourage the citizens to continue contacting the police with their helpful information," Laude said.

"The hallowed obligation of the SDN cops is to serve and protect our people against fraudsters taking advantage and to lay the groundwork for peace and security in the community," the official added.

The Mainit police is presently coordinating with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to charge Villarmino for violating Republic Act 7394, the Consumer Act of the Philippines. (PCpl Gladys L. Jangao, SDNPPO/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
