By Venus L. Garcia

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte, Sept. 29 (PIA) -- Even with the cancellation of the annual fiesta celebrations in Surigao City due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the locals are keeping busy in promoting and patronizing the locally-made products.

Assorted food and non-food items were showcased during the launch of the “Karajawan Nan Surigao” Trade Expo 2020 spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) - Surigao del Norte Provincial Office together with the Surigao Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated.

This is the first online trade expo conducted in Caraga region.

DTI-Surigao del Norte initiated and opted for digital trade expo as a strategy to help address the economic turmoil associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

According to DTI-Surigao del Norte provincial director Elmer Natad, the agency is ensuring that necessary interventions for the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are provided amid the crisis such as selling of One Town, One Products (OTOP) via online display and livestreaming.

The trade expo was also made possible through the assistance of the DTI Negosyo Center coordinators of the municipality of Claver, Bacuag, Placer, Mainit, including Surigao City and the towns of Siargao Island.

“Let us help our local entrepreneurs for the economy to recover because no one is spared from the adverse effect of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Natad.

Meanwhile, the local business stakeholders were thankful for providing them the platform and opportunity to sustain their source of livelihood by offering their products in the digital market in this time of the pandemic.

“We are thanking the DTI for the big help it extended in order for us to showcase the products of Surigao City to the entire Philippines,” said Rubilyn Cellona, member of the Maradjaw Karadjaw Local Producers Association.

Surigao Chamber of Commerce board of director Engr. Leonil Santos said that their organization is fully supporting the trade expo as this is their way of promoting  the economic recovery programs of the government. (SDR/VLG/PIA-Surigao del Norte)

TESDA, Army facilitate skills training to IPs of Zapanta Valley in AgNor

By Capt. Miguel O. Borromeo, Jr.

KITCHARAO, Agusan del Norte, Sept. 29 -- The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in Agusan del Norte in partnership with the 29th Infantry (Matatag Fighters) Battalion (29IB), Philippine Army recently facilitated a five-day skills training on haircut and manicure/pedicure, which was held at So. Zapanta Valley Multipurpose Hall, Brgy. Bangayan, Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte.

Thirteen trainees participated in the haircut training and 27 in the manicure and pedicure training. The training was conducted by the TESDA representative Marlito L. Castro, Technical Vocational Trainer. The activity ended with satisfactory results and the absence of accidents. This training will be the means for the 40 participants to gain useful skills which can help them earn extra income.

According to Lt. Col. Isagani O. Criste, Commanding Officer of 29IB, “It is well to remember what the late Benjamin Franklin said- ‘an investment in knowledge pays the best interest.' I know the reason why the government has been continuously showering our people with support and skills training such as this is that it believes that these programs would not just make them qualify for future work but will also be the means to a far better future for their family."

"Thus, let us work together to support our government and never allow the Communist NPA terrorists (CNTs) to take control of our lives and our community,” he added. (CMO Officer, 29IB, 4ID, PA/PIA Agusan del Norte)
