DOH intensifies campaign against firecrackers

by Nora CL Molde

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 14 (PIA)
-- The Department of Health – Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Caraga is intensifying its campaign to reduce and eliminate firecracker-related injuries during the holiday season.

DOH-CHD Caraga through its regional director Dr. Leonita P. Gorgolon is called for the support of the public to strengthen their campaign for this year, entitled ‘APIR!’

According to Gorgolon, their office will adopt ‘APIR’ which stands for “Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction,” a campaign strategy to prevent injuries from firecrackers by advocating precautionary measures to prevent using it and adopt alternative ways in celebrating a joyful holiday season.

The word APIR was coined from "up here" part of “high-five” or “give me five” greeting used in the US.

The campaign uses healthy hands as a symbol, in contrast to a mangled or injured hand. The campaign advocates five reminders to prevent injury from firecrackers and five simple alternative tips and ways to spend the New Year's Eve, DOH added.

The five reminders include: mapanganib ang paggamit ng paputok (firecrackers are dangerous), lahat ng paputok ay bawal sa bata (firecrackers are not intended for kids), lumayo sa mga taong nagpapaputok (go far from a person using a firecracker/s), huwag mamulot ng di sumabog na paputok (don’t pick up unexploded firecracker/s), and magpagamot agad kapag naputukan (seek immediate medication once injured with a firecracker/s).

The five simple alternative tips and ways are: itaguyod at makilahok sa Community Fireworks Display (pursue and join Community Fireworks Display), magdiwang ng ligtas kasama ang pamilya (celebrate with family safely), lumikha ng ingay gamit ang ibang bagay tulad ng torotot, busina, musika, lata, at iba pa (create noise using other things), makisaya sa ibang paraan tulad ng street party, concert, palaro, at iba pa (enjoy the celebration by attending parties, concerts, etc.), and matuto sa mga aral ng nakaraan at magsimula nang maayos na buhay sa Bagong Taon (learn from previous experiences and start a good life this New Year). Feature: More Filipinos using health supplements

by Annie Lyn D. Bacani

Adults in Metro Manila have high awareness and usage of health supplements.

This was revealed by 7th National Nutrition Survey (NNS) of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (or FNRI-DOST) done in 2008.

Health supplements, also known as dietary supplement, food supplement or nutritional supplement, are preparations intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids, that may be missing or may not be consumed in sufficient quantities in a person's diet.

The survey further revealed that by gender, women were more aware of and used more health supplements than men. Some reasons cited by respondents for using health supplements were: “it made them healthy”, “gave them energy” and “helped them perform better in school or work”.

While many health supplements may improve one’s intake of nutrients, these cannot replace good and balanced meals.

FNRI’s on-line nutrition school gets 'very satisfactory' rating from students

by Jund Rian A. Doringo

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 14 (PIA)
– Three years after its launch on October 25, 2007, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (or FNRI-DOST) evaluated the effectiveness of its on-line nutrition school. Respondents of its on-line questionnaires were those who have completed, at the least, its first module.

The study showed that the online school is useful, accessible and helpful in arriving at healthy choices.

The FNRI-DOST, in cooperation with Nestle Philippines, Inc. spearheaded the NutritionSchool.ph, the first of its kind on-line nutrition school in the country.

The school offers six modules namely: Basic Nutrition, Nutrition in the Life Cycle, Nutrition and Disease, Foods, Meal Management, and State of Nutrition in the Philippines.

Overall, the nutrition school received a “very satisfactory” rating among the fifty-three participants who responded to the on-line questionnaires.

However, the need to upgrade the system is recommended.
