DPWH-BCDEO to prioritize asphalt-overlaying of Butuan roads

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 30 (PIA) -- Butuan City District Engineering Office (BCDEO) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is prioritizing the asphalt-overlaying of roads in this city.

According to Engr. Rey Canlas, BCDEO Project Engineer, DPWH will conduct asphalting of major road networks in the city, particularly the main highway going to Cagayan de Oro City by 2012.

He said DPWH Regional Office was tasked to conduct such project as the said highway is a national road.

He said Butuanons should be thankful since the DPWH is developing infrastructure projects giving convenience to the riding public.

Engr. Canlas added that aside from the national road, DPWH also plans to develop other major roads in the city through road repairs and asphalt-overlaying.

Infrastructure development forms part of the Caraga Regional Development Plan crafted by Regional Development Council (RDC) headed by Chair Dr. Sol F. Matugas who is also the Governor of the province of Surigao del Norte. (PIA-Caraga)

Butuan City’s revenue tops P300 M

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 30 (PIA) -- The city government here has collected tax revenue amounting to more than P300 million after Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr. assumed the position 19 months ago.

In an interview with a radio station here, City Councilor Ryan Anthony Culima, chairman of the Committee on Trade and Industry said for over one and a half year of Mayor Amante’s administration, the city government was able to overcome the budget deficit of the previous administration.

Culima added when Mayor Amante assumed the position, he inherited a budget deficit of some P24 million from the previous administration.

“Sa paglingkod sa office ni Mayor Jun Amante, aduna’y budget deficit nga kapin kon kulang 24 milyones ka pesos… Karong panahuna, after more or less one and a half years, adunay savings nga more or less 300 million pesos nga cash… So makita nato kung gi-unsa pag-manage sa administrasyon ni Mayor Amante ang panudlanan sa dakbayan,” Culima said.

(When Mayor Jun Amante assumed to office, there is a budget deficit of some P24 million… At present, after more or less one and a half years, we have incurred savings of some P300 million cash… So, we can see how the Amante administration managed the financial aspect of the city.)

The official also said more infrastructure projects are lined-up and are set to be implemented next year that will attract business investors.

Culima further said some business investors have already expressed their intentions to put investments here, an indication that these businessmen have confidence in the administration of Mayor Amante.

Meanwhile, in a previous press conference with Mayor Amante, the official said Robinsons Department Store is set to start the construction of Robinson’s Mall next year. He also said negotiation is on-going between the city government and SM Supermarket.

Culima said this is the result of the transparency and accountability governance exercised by Mayor Amante, supporting the flagship program of the Aquino administration as emphasized in the Philippine Development Plan. (PIA-Caraga)

Buenavista LGU urged to repair damaged sea walls

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 30 (PIA) -- The provincial government of Agusan del Norte has urged the local government unit of the Municipality of Buenavista to spend part of their Gawad Pamana Awards cash earnings for the rehabilitation of damaged sea walls.

According to Mr. Rofel Cabaltera, Agusan del Norte Provincial Planning Office Chief, residents in the coastal municipality of Buenavista have been asking the provincial government for the rehabilitation of the sea walls that have been damaged due to strong waves.

Cabaltera said that the provincial government officials have acknowledged the need for immediate rehabilitation of the said infrastructure, prompting them to ask the municipal officials to set aside budget for the said purpose.

The official also said some coastal barangays of the municipality have yet to construct sea walls, raising fear among residents whenever typhoons hit the area.

In the past, strong waves brought about by typhoons in Agusan del Norte have damaged sea walls in coastal communities. (PIA-Caraga)

Butuan City commemorates 115th Rizal Day

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 30 (PIA) –- The city government today commemorated the 115th year of Dr. Jose P. Rizal's martyrdom in a simple ceremony held at the city’s Rizal Park.

City hall employees and from other government regional offices came early to the venue clad in their office uniforms and witness the ceremony as the city government paid tribute to Dr. Jose Rizal through a wreath-laying ceremony at the hero’s monument.

In an interview with City Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr. after the program, he said the life and death of Dr. Jose Rizal may serve as an inspiration to the Filipino people especially to the youths who are the future leaders and heroes of the country.

Mayor Amante also underscored the importance of serving the country with transparency and accountability as these are some of the factors to make this country move forward.

“If we only have a common goal and that is to serve the country with honesty and integrity, then we could be able to reach our aspirations therefore making this country move forward,” Amante said.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Lawrence Lemuel Fortun pointed out that the Filipino people don’t have to die to become heroes but with the contributions they have made for the benefit of the country is enough for them to be called heroes.

“We should not have to die for us to be called heroes but for every good contribution that we give for the benefit of our fellowmen and the country, in general makes us like a hero in our own little way,” Fortun said.

Fortun also called on the people especially the youths to live with the legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal and not just commemorating his memories. “What is important is we also have to apply the good deeds of our national hero as we strive hard for the better,” he added. (PIA-Caraga)

PSWD intensifies burial assistance to PWDs in Agusan del Norte

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 30 (PIA) -- The Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWD) Office here is stengthening its burial assistance to persons with disabilities (PWD) in Agusan del Norte.

“Family of deceased PWD members receives financial assistance for burial,” said PSWD chief Daisy Dimaguibas.

The official said this was made possible because the PWDs have organizations in the province that are registered in their office. She added PWDs can directly ask assistance from these organizations in times of emergency.

Dimaguibas added they are strengthening burial assistance program in each organization because they find it beneficial to all members, especially to their families when they died.

“This is a way of helping the families of the PWDs by the time that they (PWDs) will die… At least with this assistance, the burden of the family members experienced will be lessened,” the PSWD chief said.

Because of the support extended by the provincial government, Dimaguibas said the PWD members in the province have strengthened their camaraderie.

She said the provincial government through the leadership of Gov. Erlpe John M. Amante vowed to continue supporting the PWDs in the coming years. (PIA-Caraga)
