Peace advocates converge in Surigao City for Mindanao Week of Peace

SURIGAO DEL NORTE, Nov. 24 (PIA) -- Peace advocates in the region converged in Surigao City today for the opening celebration of this year’s Mindanao Week of Peace.
The theme of this years' celebration is “Common Word Between Us and You: Love of God and Love of Neighbor” with the Caraga Conference for Peace and Development (CCPD) spearheading the event.
The said observance is in line with the Presidential Proclamation No. 127 dated Nov. 26, 2001 which assigns the last Thursday of November up to the first Wednesday of December every year as the Mindanao Week of Peace aimed to provide a venue for expression of peace aspirations in various forms and for convergence of peace.
This year’s celebration will commence with a ‘Walk for Peace’ early in the morning in Surigao City which will start in three different venues: near the junction of Iglesia ni Cristo, Barangay Hall of San Juan and TT and Company near Borromeo Street and will end at the city Luneta. A press conference will then follow after the short program.
Other activities during the weeklong celebration include an Hour of Silence for Peace on Nov. 24; GADCC Walk for Peace in Butuan City spearheaded by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Caraga Regional Office on Nov. 25; Trees for Peace, a tree planting activity at Mt. Mayapay in Buenavista area and in Government Center in Brgy. Tiniwisan, Butuan City in support of the National Greening Program of the present administration on Nov. 25; Panaw sa Kalinaw (Walk for Peace) still on Nov. 25.
On Saturday, Nov. 26, a Bike for Peace will be conducted in Butuan City sponsored by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Philippine National Police and CCPD. (PIA-Surigao del Norte)

Surigao del Norte to hold Women’s Summit

SURIGAO CITY, Nov. 24 (PIA) -- The provincial government of Surigao del Norte will be spearheading the Women’s Summit on Friday, November 25 at the Provincial Convention Center, this city.
With the theme “Panginabuhi sa Kababainhan, Yawe sa Kalambuan” (Women’s livelihood, key to progress), the summit begins with a ribbon cutting of women’s livelihood exhibit, which will be facilitated by various women’s organizations and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Following the ribbon cutting, DOLE Undersecretary Lourdes Transmonte will give her keynote speech while DOLE Caraga Regional Director Ofelia Domingo will discuss the agency’s Rationale of Livelihood Project/Assistance.
Other activities to highlight the event include the launching of E-Bamboo Livelihood Project and discussion on Entrepreneurship Development and Livelihood Opportunities.
The summit will culminate with the Turn-over of Certificate of Availment of Livelihood Assistance to qualified beneficiaries of the province. (PIA-Surigao del Norte)

PADAC Surigao Sur conducts symposium on anti-illegal drugs in Bislig City

SURIGAO DEL SUR, Nov. 24 (PIA) -- Members of the Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC) here, in partnership with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Caraga conducted a symposium on Anti-Illegal Drugs at Andres Soriano College (ASC), Mangagoy, Bislig City.
The activity was the first information education campaign conducted after it was launched on September. The said symposium is a continuing activity where series of schedule has been set before the year 2011 ends.
ASC President Dr. Pacencia Malazarte warmly welcomed the “JYes Kontra Droga Program” Chaired by Governor Johnny Pimentel, expressing her gratitude for making ASC the venue for the 1st symposium conducted by PADAC & PDEA.
Dr. Malazarte said she is grateful for this occasion because the advocacy in ASC is for them to be a “Drug-Free and Smoke-Free Zone.”
During the symposium, Ms Christy Silvan of PDEA Caraga discussed the different kinds of Illegal drugs as well as the harmful effects of dangerous drugs to users physically and mentally. Silvan also discussed some provisions stated on Article II, also known as the Unlawful Acts and Penalties stated on RA 9165.
Aldie Mae Andoy of DSWD 13 also explained the Social Dynamics on Children and Youth, Deviant Delinquent Behavior.
Andoy added that poverty, low level of education, domestic violence, family neglect, and drug abuse are some of the factors that contribute to a child’s deviant behavior and delinquency. (PIA-Surigao del Sur)

Surigao City cops not remiss in their duty

SURIGAO CITY, Nov. 24 (PIA) –- The Chief of Police of this coastal city yesterday clarified that under his leadership the Surigao City Police Office has done a lot in combating the proliferation of illegal drugs, particularly shabu, in their area of responsibility.
P/Supt Alfonso Pagkaliwagan Jr, city police director, made the clarification in reaction to the public statement made last week by some members of the Sangguniang Panglungsod of Surigao City, who condemned the alleged inaction of the city police vis-à-vis the growing drug menace in the locality.
Pagkaliwagan said that since he assumed office on August 20, 2011 the city police has already filed many drug cases against notorious addicts and pushers in the city and the same can be verified in the records of the City Fiscals’ Office and the courts. (PIA-Surigao del Norte)

BUTUAN CITY, Nov. 24 (PIA) –- Muling nanawagan ang Malacañang sa hukuman sa pagpapabilis nito sa paglilitis sa kaso ng Maguindanao massacre para sa kapakanan ng mga naiwang kamag-anak ng mga biktima na sumisigaw ng hustisya sa kagimbal-gimbal na krimen dalawang taon na ang nakalipas.
Ito ang inilabas na pahayag kahapon ni Edwin Lacierda, ang tagapagsalita ni Pangulong Benigno S. Aquino III, at ipina-alam din niya sa publiko na nananatiling tapat ang Pangulo sa kanyang pangakong magbigay ng proteksyon para sa mga testigo at mga kamag-anak ng mga biktima.
Ayon kay Lacierda, ginagawa ng administrasyong Aquino ang lahat na makakaya para makamit ang hustisya para sa mga biktima ng massacre samantala, alam ng administrasyon na ang pagsasakatuparan ng masabing layunin ay hindi lamang nakasalalay sa Malacañang.
Idinagdag ni Lacierda na ang kalihim n Interior and Local Government na si Jesse Robredo ay kasalukuyang nasa Maguindanao upang mangasiwa sa mga kakailangangan gawin ng Philippine National Police (PNP) na tumutugis pa rin hanggang ngayon sa mga posibleng suspek na sabing krimen.
Ibinunyag din ni Lacierda na “patuloy po nilang hinahanap ang mga hindi pa nahuhuli pero ang mahalaga po, doon sa mga nahuli na po, lalo na sa mga principal ng kaso, ang aming pakiusap ay ituloy na rin ang kaso. Si Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda mipagawas niining maong pamahayag atol sa press briefing niadtong kagahapon Miyerkules sa dihang siya mipahibalo nga si Pangulong Benigno S. Aquino III nagpabilin sa iyang panaad paghatag proteksyon alang sa mga testigo ug mga kaparyente sa mga biktima.
Si Lacierda miingon ang administrasyong Aquino mihimo sa tanan niining gahom aron pagawas ang hustisya alang sa mga namatay’ng biktima sa maong massacre apan giangkon usab niini nga ang katuman niini wala sa mga kamot sa Malacañang.
“We would wish that the process, the judicial process, [can] be fast-tracked. This case is not in the hands entirely of the executive branch or the prosecution,” si Lacierda miingon sa dihang iyang gipadayag ang respeto niini sa awtoridad isip katambayayong sa hudikatura mahitungod niini nga butang.
