SURIGAO CITY, Sept. 27 (PIA) – The city government of Surigao recently presented the Tourism Excellence Award to outstanding local tourism enterprises in the city in recognition of their commitment to excellence and for consistently delivering significant contribution to the city's tourism development.
The said recognition was held Monday, Sep. 26, 2011 during the kick-off ceremony in celebration of the National Tourism Week and World Tourism Day spearheaded by the City Tourism Office at the City Hall Building, this city.
It was learned that, Philippine Gateway Hotel received the award of the highest number of hotel guests throughout the year 2010 among the hotel accommodation with 19,403 guests recorded.
Hotel Tavern received the highest occupancy rate for hotel accommodation category with 75.96% increase; Gunter Pension Hauz with 84.90 % increase for pension houses category; and Big Brother Hauz with 44.44% increase for apartelle establishments. Also, SLB Pension Annex received a 'Prompt Submission of Tourist Arrival Report' award for its prompt submission of monthly tourist arrival data from January up to present.
Bethlehem (House of Bread) and Bastie Coffeeshops & Resto also received the award for New Tourism Related Investment category in promoting tourism and demonstrating positive economic impacts in the city of Surigao; and Diwata Highlands received the award for New Tourism Attraction.
Meanwhile, members of the Bonok-Bonok Festival working committee headed by Festival Director Richard Nick Amores were also given the Special Thanks and Recognition (STAR) award for their remarkable services and contribution during the Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival 2011 held on September 9, 2011. BUTUAN CITY, Sept. 27 (PIA) – In line with the implementation of the ‘Clean Ground, Zero Waste’ Program led by the city government headed by Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr, the Clean Airwaves Committee chaired by Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Caraga Regional Director Abner Caga has partnered with the local tri-media here in the campaign for the ‘Clean Ground, Zero Waste’ Program.
Said committee proposed to the city government to hold an Orientation/Forum with the local tri-media as participants on the existing laws/ordinances related to Climate Change, environment being the rationale for the ‘Clean Ground, Zero Waste’ come October 2011.
The forum will serve as a venue for the media to express their commitment of support to the program. The forum will also make them well-versed on laws governing environmental protection and solid waste management with speakers coming from this field of expertise.
Covenant signing between media and the city government is also part of the committee’s plan after the conduct of said forum with the media is done. Accordingly, this will strengthen more the partnership between the city government and the local tri-media.
Also, Dir. Caga expressed that PIA has been supporting and disseminating information on the program from the very start of its inception in coordination with Ms. Ruth Jugao, City Economic Enterprise and Development Office (CEEDO) Manager and over-all coordinator for the ‘Clean Ground, Zero Waste’ Program. 67 ARBs receive land titles

AGUSAN DEL SUR, Sept. 27 (PIA) – Some 67 agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) received land titles or certificate of land ownership awards (CLOA) as proof of ownership of the land they till from the Department of Agrarian Reform, Agusan del Sur provincial office in Barangay Katipunan, Bayugan City that highlighted the celebration of the Araw ng Barangay Katipunan.
The 67 land titles are portions of 460.6553 hectares located in Brgy. Katipunan, Bayugan City, subject for distribution to some 282 identified ARBs who are members of Katipunan Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Association (KARBA) organized last April 2011.
Bayugan City Mayor Kim Lope Asis expressed his joy, witnessing his constituents receiving the CLOAs, hoping that the ARBs will be more productive for having security of tenure with the proof of ownership of the land they till.
“I am very grateful to our DAR partners for distributing the CLOA/titles to our ARBs. The land you are tilling can now be called your very own. I encourage you utilize your land and plant them with various vegetables, fruits and other plants, aside from rubber and coconut trees that you have already planted. You should persevere and work hard. This way, you can give your family a decent living,” Mayor Asis said.
Assistant Regional Director Alejandro S. Otacan also said that the land should be taken care of by the ARBs.
“We should not waste the effort and money that the government had spent in giving you the titles. Remember that these titles cannot be transferred, mortgaged or sold to other persons, so I ask you refrain from doing it. Those were violations with corresponding penalties,” ARD Otacan said.
According to Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer Myrna Ferer, having CLOA in their possession, and with beneficiaries’ diligence plus the help extended to them by the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) and the local government, there is no reason that the ARBs will not succeed and have a decent life ahead.
Happiness were also seen in the faces of the ARBs that they were given the titles. “We have been cultivating our area for more than 20 years now and finally, we have the titles which symbolized that we now owned the land legally. Our heartfelt thanks to DAR and our local government for giving these gift to us. In return, we will do our best to make our land more productive,” ARBs spouses Roberto Molina said.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

CEBU CITY, Sept. 27 (PIA) – As the whole country commemorates Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) urged the public to engage in early detection and prevention measures to fight breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Cebuano women, based on the Cebu Population-based Cancer Registry of EJACC.
From 1993 to 2007, EJACC recorded a total of 3,005 reported breast cancer cases in Metro Cebu. Breast cancer, which is characterized by an abnormal growth of breast cells, is most common in women ages 30 to 59.
EJACC initiated its own efforts to raise public awareness on the importance of early cancer detection and prevention. One of these is Moonwalk: A Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness, a unique advocacy campaign of RAFI held every full moon of October, which aims to promote the importance of observing monthly breast self-examination for women aged 20 and beyond.
Moonwalk also aims to popularize the importance of early detection practices, including breast self-examination, regular clinical breast examination, and annual mammography screening.
This year, Moonwalk will be held on Oct. 12 when participants from different sectors, including cancer patients and survivors, youths, professionals, and women from the barangays, walk from Cebu Business Park to The Walk at Asiatown I.T. Park.
“It is important to detect breast cancer at an early stage as, like many forms of cancer, breast cancer may be more easily cured with early detection,” Ronald delos Reyes, program coordinator for EJACC, said.
The primary risk factors for breast cancer are sex, old age, lack of childbearing or breastfeeding, higher hormone levels (specifically estrogen), dietary iodine deficiency, high fat diets, alcohol intake, tobacco use, obesity, and hereditary factors.
There are steps every person can take to help the body stay as healthy as possible and lower the risk of breast cancer, such as maintaining a healthy weight, breastfeeding for lactating mothers, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, and exercising regularly.
EJACC offers annual monthly breast and cervical cancer screenings and provide assistance like mammography screening for high-risk patients to detect malignancies.
EJACC is a program under the Integrated Development focus area of RAFI, addressing health issues of communities in order to create a better quality of life. Its other focus areas are Micro-finance and Entrepreneurship, Culture & Heritage, Leadership and Citizenship, and Education.

“Simply extortion, people suffer”
LIANGA, Surigao del Sur, Sept. 27 (PIA) – Some 10 to 15 hectares of banana plants were destroyed by alleged New Peoples Army (NPA) together with Militia ng Bayan (MB) and burned three trucks and heavy equipment owned by Dole Philippines Corporation at Barangay Anahaw Daan, Tago, Surgao del Sur on September 26, 2011 at about 01:30 in the morning.
The investigation revealed that three dump trucks and two backhoes were torched down by around 30 NPAs and 50 MBs due to failure of paying revolutionary tax to Communist Party of the Philippines/New Peoples Army/National Democratic Front (CNN).
Meanwhile, the army’s 401st Infantry “Unite N’ Fight” Bridage under Col Romeo G Gan issued a statement condemning the recent NPA terrorist attack on the business sector.
“This act of extortion affected our economy and the livelihood opportunity of the populace. If they really care for our nation they should stop hurting the community and the environment,” Col Gan said.
Gan also added that due to the CNN’s desperation they resorted to pursue threats, illegal and violent activities to force the people to give their support.
Meanwhile, Col Gan denounced the terrorist action and issued a direct order to subordinate units to exert all efforts in coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) in pursuit of the criminals. (401st IB/PIA-Caraga)
Bayugan City conducts VAW desk orientation

BUTUAN CITY, Sept. 27 (PIA) – The Local Government Unit of Bayugan City, through the Office of the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) conducted an Orientation on Violence Against Women (VAW) Desk for the officials of the covered barangays held recently at the Lope A. Asis Memorial Gymnasium, Bayugan City.
12 Punong Barangays and 42 Barangay Kagawads who are Chaired the Women and Children Committee attended the activity.
The orientation aims to ensure the establishment of a VAW Desk in every barangay of the City as provided in Republic Act 9710 or the Magna Carta of Women to ensure that violence against women cases are fully addressed in a gender-sensitive manner.
In his message, Hon. Kirk A. Asis, Sangguniang Panlungsod member and IACAT-VAWC Co-Chairman, emphasized that the issue on violence against women should be responded by concerned LGUs since it affects the family especially the children. He also added that barangays should come up with programs and projects geared towards strengthening family relations and youth development.
DILG Provincial Director Arleen Ann R. Sanchez provided inputs on the DILG, DSWD, DepEd, DOH, and PCW’s Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2010-2 dated December 9, 2010 which is the Guidelines in the Establishment of a VAW Desk in every barangay while Mrs. Flordeliza C. Obani of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office discussed the salient features of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act.
At the end of the activity, it was agreed that every barangay in Bayugan City will establish a VAW Desk and designate a VAW Desk Officer before October 2011 ends.

ANECO supports PNoy’s electrification program

Dubbed as the “Barangay Line Enhancement and Sitio Energization Program,” this priority program will start this year and will run up to 2016 with a budget of P31 billion.
During the workshop organized by the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the National Electrification Administration (NEA) at the PDA, Toledo City last September 21 to 24, 2011, the said priority program was hatched.
Participated by 277 delegates from Regions VI to XII, ARMM and the Caraga, the workshop aims to discuss new critical issues and concerns, strategies and initiatives to ensure smooth program implementation and to comply with the requirements of the Office of the President and the Commission on Audit (COA).
The delegates composed of General Managers, Finance, Institutional and Technical Managers were very enthusiastic in supporting the said program. Initial project cost is pegged at P1.5 billion with a target of 1,410 sitios and puroks with a target date of completion at the end of this year. An initial budget of P814 million will be released to start the program.
Spearheaded by ANECO General Manager Santos, the entire ECs (Electric Cooperatives) of Caraga region is committed to energize some 102 puroks and sitios by the end or before the end of December 2011. This is distributed as follows: ASELCO – 20, DIELCO – 14, SIARELCO – 18, SURNECO – 14, SURSECO 1 – 3, SURSECO 2 – 6, and ANECO – 27.
According to GM Santos, an initial P20,800,000.00 (Twenty Million Eight Hundred Thousand pesos) budget for the 27 identified puroks and sitios in Butuan City and Agusan del Norte is expected to be downloaded to ANECO’s account. This 27 puroks and sitios is part of the 159 unenergized sitios of his AOR. They will be energized before the end of this year. With barely 3 months to finish, GM Santos remains optimistic of the full realization of this noble priority program of His Excellency Pres. Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III.
