Provincial gov't's 6-month medical mission in motion

by David M. Suyao

AGUSAN DEL SUR, July 9 (PIA) – Fifty patients suffering from various illnesses were treated as the six-month medical mission of the provincial government kicked off in June at the D.O. Plaza Memorial Hospital (DOPMH).

Dr. Joel Esparagoza, Provincial Health Officer of the DOPMH, said the group of doctors and medical practitioners performed minor surgeries such as cyst, myoma, boils, harelip and conducted medical consultations. Free medicines were also given out.

All program expenses were shouldered by the provincial government, with counterpart funds from the municipal government of the town where treatments were being held.

Before the schedule is set for every municipality, the municipal health office conducted initial interview with the patients. "If the patient is not qualified for treatment, they were given recommendation for registration at the D.O. Plaza Memorial Hospital in Patin-ay so that we can determine the number of patients that are subject for operation and other treatment. For patients that cannot be treated even here in our hospital, they will be given proper referral to more complete hospital and doctor specialists,” Dr. Esparagoza said.

The medical mission is one of the major activities of Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza administration’s eight point program on health and sanitation. It started since 1992, during the administration of then Gov. Democrito O. Plaza, which was also a component of his five-point program of governance on health and was adopted and continued until at present.

Before the medical mission by the provincial government started last month, District I Representative Maria Valentina Plaza has been extending medical outreach in her district, while District II Representative Evelyn Plaza-Mellana do the same also in her district, both conducted in recipient municipalities. Both outreach ended last May, when the provincial medical mission started.

The first fifty patients treated of their illnesses came from all over the province. Every month thereafter, two municipalities are scheduled to be served until December this year. This month of July, the mission will serve the Municipality of La Paz and the City of Bayugan.

“We are now in the final stages of completing the administration version and once it is completed, yan po ay isa-submit natin sa Ledac (Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council) at isa-submit sa ating mga mambabatas so that it can take its due course,” si Presidential Communication Operations Office Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma miingon atol sa gipahigayong “No Holds Barred” media forum didto sa National Press Club niadtong Huwebes, Hunyo 7, 2011.
