AFP vows to protect IPs from rebel harassment

by Danilo S. Makiling

BUTUAN CITY, May 29 (PIA) – The military assured members of the Manobo and Mamanwa tribes that their security will be protected against possible harassment from New People’s Army rebels.

2Lt Reynaldo Cocon Jr., Assistant CMO officer of the 402nd Brigade said the indigenous peoples (IP) should trust the government so that their area will soon be developed. “When that time comes, everything will slowly go back to normal,” Cocon said.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) recently conducted a grand pulong-pulong or meeting through the Community Organization for Peace and Development (COPD) to reach out to tribesmen (Manobo and Mamanwa) residing in Sitio Lusong, Barangay Puting Bato Cabadbaran City.

During the meeting, the IPs reported shifted their loyalty to the government after realizing that their act of supporting the NPA rebels was against the law.

It was revealed during the community gathering that some members of the Manobo in Sitio Lusong were providing support, while others were recruited, to the New People’s Army (NPA). The NPA got their provisions through the help of the IPs who would buy goods and others stuff down in the downtown area for the rebel group. (PIA-Caraga)
