BUTUAN CITY, March 29 (PIA) – As part of the intensified anti-drug courier campaign, the Regional Office of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) here invited local media of the city recently for a video showing of PIA-produced video “Operation: Homerun”.

During the roundtable discussion, personnel from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Caraga Region also joined the group of media and explained the details of the Operation: Homerun, an operation of PDEA conducted in March 7-31, 2010 and apprehended members of the West African Drug Syndicates (WADS).

Caraga is free from drug mules, PDEA says

By: Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, March 29 (PIA) – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) recently said there have been no reports of drug mules or any involvement to international drug trafficking in Caraga Region.

“Thus, Caraga Region is free from drug couriers,” said Christine Silvan, Deputy Officer-in-charge of PDEA-Caraga during the recent interview with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

Silvan said PDEA report shows that as of press time, majority of those who were victimized by seasoned drug courier recruiters are from Luzon. She also said Davao City is among those that included in the list for Mindanao.

“We are fortunate since we don’t receive any report that our region has been included in the list of those who were recruited as drug mules,” Silvan said.

Silvan added that because of the reported increasing number of drug couriers arrested abroad with some are already in the death row, the official calls on the public especially those who are constantly going abroad and those who are still planning to go abroad to be vigilant so that they may not be included in the increasing number of Filipinos victimized by international drug syndicates.

It can be recalled that on Wednesday, March 23, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported the three Filipinos who were convicted by the Chinese court for serious crime of drug trafficking is scheduled to be executed on March 30, 2011.

This, according to Silvan, may serve as an eye opener to all Filipinos to be careful and not to engage in any drug courier transactions. “After all, we know that drug trafficking is a serious crime, so we must also know the consequences if ever perpetrators are apprehended,” Silvan dislcosed.
