CSU website among the top 5 in the 12th Philippine Web Awards

BUTUAN CITY, March 15 – The Caraga State University (CSU) website has been chosen as one of the top five semifinalists in the 12th Philippine Web Awards (PWA) in the schools category.

CSU was named one of the top five semifinalists when PWA released its list of semifinalists in all categories in their website last March 4, 2011.

This is the first time that the CSU website joined the Philippine Web Awards, a competition for the best websites in the country. The Philippine Web Awards is a yearly event that “annually recognizes the best Filipino-created websites and honors the individuals and teams behind them.” The CSU website is the only website from Butuan City and from Mindanao and the Visayas Regions that was included in the list of semifinalists in the school category.

The selection of the semifinalists was made according to the following criteria: design, technology used, content, functionality, and originality.

As published in the PWA website, the nomination period began Sept. 1, 2010 and ended last February 15, 2011. CSU barely made it to the nomination period when it registered its website only in the 3rd week of January this year. The initial deadline of nomination was last January 25. All entries went through the elimination round which ended on March 3 last week.

Similar to the past PWA’s, the public then can choose their bets among the semifinalists for the People’s Choice Award through online and SMS voting. The five selected websites after the semifinal round, who will compete for the Judges’ Choice Awards, will be judged by an elite panel that will include web design gurus and top IT journalists. The semifinal and final rounds will run from March 7 to 18 and March 21 to April 7, 2011 respectively.

The online voting for the People's Choice Award began last March 10, 2011 through their website: http://peopleschoice.philippinewebawards.com. For a school to win, or in this case for CSU to win, all who wish to vote should visit the website mentioned above beginning March 10 until the voting ends on April 7 this summer.

Among the previous winners in the schools category were De La Salle University (Manila), De La Salle University – Dasmarinas (Cavite), Mapua Institute of Technology (Manila), Endurun Colleges (Manila), Don Bosco Technical College (Manila) and current heavyweights and semifinalists STI (Manila) and Aquinas University.

The Philippine Web Awards categories include: arts and portfolio, blogs, community and portal, e-business, schools, personal, lifestyle and leisure, corporations, foundations and organizations, news, zines and entertainment, and SMEs

The CSU website participated the competition with the consent and approval of Dr. Joanna B. Cuenca, CSU President. It was developed and is currently being maintained by the staff of the ICT Center led by its director Dr. Rolyn C. Daguil and the website administrator Engr. Jeffrey T. Dellosa.

CSU hopes to earn the coveted People's Choice and the Judges' Choice Awards. It can be recalled that in 2009, the website of the provincial government of Agusan del Norte was named People’s Choice Award in the same competition. (CSU/PIA-Caraga)

I-RICE: a clear manifestation of government’s concern on nutrition – Mayor Amante

by: Nora Cl Molde

BUTUAN CITY, Mar. 15 (PIA) -- "The I-RICE project is a clear manifestation of the government’s concern for the nutrition of our people," says Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante, Jr. during the launching of the Iron Fortified Rice (I-RICE) Tuesday at the National Food Authority (NFA) Agusan del Norte provincial office, this city.

Mayor Amante in his I-Talk (Inspirational talk) expressed his congratulations and gratitude to NFA regional director Javier P. Lozada, Jr. for launching the I-RICE in our region. With the launching, he said, the can be able to provide consumers with the I-RICE, which can supply 50% of the daily requirements of our body needs. The other 50% will be taken from the food we eat like green leafy vegetables.

"We should intensify all our efforts to bring back the integrity and image of the government to re-invent the concept for the people to be interested that they will buy this concept," Mayor Amante said.

He also said that micronutrient deficiency has always been a problem, not only in Butuan Cty, but also all over the country, and thus, the I-RICE, a government investment will help lessen and even solve micronutrient deficiency.

Mayor Amante also added that the city of Butuan would do its part to support the government’s initiative in addressing the deficiency on micronutrients by also giving support to the I-RICE program of the government.

"The availability of fortified rice will greatly help us address nutrition-related problems by utilizing it in our barangay feeding projects and other nutrition-related activities," Mayor Amante added.

He even encouraged the NFA and the Department of Agriculture to come with other similar experiments as the I-RICE project because he said, the health of our city depends on the health of our citizenry.

The re-launching of the I-RICE is a nationwide activity of the NFA and was initially introduced in the market sometime in 2004. Their specific targets then were the sectors having prevalence of anemia. This sector are mostly infants, elderly, pregnant and lactating mothers. The re-launching of the I-RICE will now target the larger sectors of the society.

I-RICE or Iron Fortified Rice is a mixture of white milled rice and I-MIX or iron premix processed through fortification. Fortified rice helps to replace nutrients lost during milling process. (PIA-Caraga)

ANECO board faces local tri-media in Butuan

By: Jennifer P. Gaitano

BUTUAN CITY, Mar. 15 (PIA) – The Agusan del Norte Electric Cooperative (ANECO) board of directors with the General Manager Horacio Santos convened recently in a press conference dubbed as “The ANECO President Speaks”.

This was launched in response to the proposed conversion of ANECO from non-stock/non-profit to a stock/profit electric cooperative, which also includes updates and related aspects on the main issue of conversion, held at the ANECO Multi-Purpose Hall, this city.

It can be recalled that series of forum have already been conducted in various municipalities in Agusan del Norte and barangays in Butuan City regarding this issue, and in order to continuously inform the member-consumers and enhance their understanding members of the board faced the local tri-media here and answered all their queries and clarifications.

When asked about the conduct of the referendum, President-Board of Director Dioscoro Boco stressed that it should be initiated by the member-consumers since they are the highest making body, and the board only ranked second.

“A referendum should only contain two questions for the member-consumers to vote. Member-consumers could vote: YES for the registration of our electric cooperative with the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) as provided in the Republic Act 9520 otherwise known as the Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008; or NO, I do not want to register our electric cooperative with CDA,” Boco emphasized.

Also, GM Horacio Santos cited the advantages and disadvantages if ANECO will be converted into a stock/profit cooperative under the CDA.

Santos said that it is more advantageous on their part as ANECO officials if the conversion will be realized if only to consider the increase of their salaries/allowances but since it is not their main purpose; they push for a non-stock/profit and service oriented because they want to continuously deliver excellent services to its clientele.

“ANECO management is advocating transparency and accountability of its services and resources especially that the National Electrification Administration (NEA) is strict in implementing its rules and regulations. Personnel of electric cooperatives under NEA is given appropriate reprimands if found accountable on any violation against laws provided for electric cooperatives,” said Santos.

Meanwhile, Boco thanked all the media personalities present during the press conference and recognized their efforts in disseminating legitimate and pertinent information to the public.

“Thank you to all our media-partners for continuously disseminating relevant information to the general public, and for giving us time to speak before you to clarify issues and concerns on the proposed conversion of our electric cooperative – ANECO from non-stock/non-profit cooperative into a stock/profit cooperative that has also been the subject of the campaign of few proponents,” said Boco.

Board of Directors present during the press conference are as follows: Dir. Romeo Romarate (Northeast Butuan); Dir. Leonardo Cruza (District Magallanes); Dir. Leoncia Hernandez (District Cabadbaran); Dir. Alberto Parajes (District Buenavista); Dir. Florante Perez (District Tubay); Dir. Gilberto Enriquez (Northwest Butuan); and Executive Vice-President of the Board – Dir. Samuel Carampatana.

ANECO has been formed in accordance with the provisions of Presidential Decree 269 under the NEA. It was incorporated on February 12, 1977 and has its central office in Butuan City with two area offices in the municipalities of Cabadbaran and Nasipit, both in Agusan del Norte, and two sub-offices in Buenavista and Tungao.
