Balangay voyage unites Filipinos from all walks of life

By: Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Feb. 9 (PIA) – “The Balangay boats, even before it started the voyage in some Southeast Asian countries, have united Filipinos from all walks of life from the time the project was conceptualized, to the construction of the three boats, to the voyage, until its homecoming,” thus said Prof. Jubail Muyong of Mindanao State University (MSU) Tawi-Tawi City during the press conference held recently in time with the crews’ homecoming and awarding ceremony here.

Prof. Muyong said, the greatest achievement which the Balangay project has accomplished is by uniting the Filipinos – Christians and Muslims alike.

“Remember, the crew members came from different walks of life and from other places in the country, regardless of trade and religious affiliations… but we were there as a team… we are united… we are a team,” Prof. Muyong said.

According to Muyong, the Balangay experience may serve as an eye opener to all Filipinos to be united in everything we will do. “Muslims and Christians alike must go hand in hand to face the challenges that the country may experience, whether floods or fire or any calamities… We should be altogether ready to face everything for the glory of our country,” Muyong disclosed.

The 42 men and women crew members of the Balangay Voyage arrived on January 31, 2011 on the height of the massive flooding which hit Caraga Region and Butuan City and on Friday, Feb. 4, the crew were given recognition by the city government here as a tribute to the gallant and valuable contribution that will surely mark another milestone in the country’s history and culture.
