.
By: David M. Suyao, PIA- Agusan del Sur

April 22, 2010 - The day at the provincial capitol of Agusan del Sur started unusual. Instead of the prescribe uniform for the day, officials and employees were clad in their casual attire, dominantly in green and black colours worn by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources personnel, both from the Local Government and the DENR who will spearhead the day’s major event. The “Grow-a-Tree”, a tree planting activity.

At the lobby of the executive building of the provincial capitol stands a wide screen, showing the proper procedure in planting a tree. Starting at 7:30 in the morning, government employees from the local and national government agencies including the PNP and the AFP, began to gather as the schedule of tree planting come nearer. The atmosphere became joyful as exchange of greetings from friends and colleagues fill the air. Then a short program started.

In his message, Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Allan Santiago who represents Gov. Maria Valentina Plaza said we are still lucky these days in our place in Agusan del Sur to enjoy the gifts that mother earth offers; the fresh air we breathe, the green leaves of trees that refreshes our sights, the crystal clear waters in rivers and streams that refresh us during very hot and dry seasons. SP member Santiago added it is therefore timely that we start today to repay our mother earth the bounty she give us and safeguard what is left for us and the generation to come.

“And for those who were blinded by the wealth that only nature and mother earth can give, show your repentance of the abuses that you inflected, by joining us in the government in Agusan del Sur, to save mother earth and help mitigate the worsening climate change,” calls SP member Santiago.

After discussing the assigned areas for every departments and offices, hundreds of government employees and officials scattered inside the land area of the government center, guided by the PENRO-LGU headed by Forester Ronulfo Paler and the DENR personnel in order to give their share by planting trees.

It can be recalled that environmental protection is one of the top priority programs of the Arroyo Administration, to counter the present threat of global warming. In fact, in every gathering that President Gloria Arroyo attended here and abroad, she seeks the support of every organization to take a collective actions to mitigate climate change.

In Agusan del Sur, one of the eight programs of government that the administration of Gov. Tina Plaza has given weight is environmental protection.

Feature News: Growing older but getting healthier

As people grow old, they start to feel body aches and pains. The ageing body undergoes physiological, psychological, and economic changes. Tiring bones and muscles have given way to fat because of the inactive hormones. All these changes contribute to poor nutrition among the elderly.

The key to health is balanced diet. Like everyone else, older people need a balanced diet to preserve good health and maintain quality of life. The following nutrients will be of great help as one grows older:

Water

Older persons often suffer from dehydration. This is because the body's water content decreases as one grows older. Older persons should remember to regularly drink at least an ounce of water for every kilo of body weight. For quick reference, follow the Daily Nutritional Guide Pyramid’s recommendation of eight glasses a day.

Protein

Protein is essential as a person ages. Protein is needed to maintain a healthy immune system and to prevent muscle wasting. At the same time, they do not need that much of energy. Foods such as egg whites, chicken without skin, lean meat, and fish, which are low-fat sources of proteins, are very much essential for the older persons.

Carbohydrates and Fiber

Carbohydrates provide the energy for the entire body. Carbohydrate-rich foods are bread, pasta, cereals, among others. Older persons usually suffer from constipation. Prevent constipation by taking a diet that is rich in water and fiber.

Fat

The diet of older people should be low in fat but not fat-free. Limit fat intake by using only lean meats and low-fat dairy products. Limit frying as a means of cooking food.

Iron

Iron helps build and maintain blood supply. It gives the healthy red color to the blood. Iron deficiency is common among older people who do not eat much. Such people should eat plenty of green leafy vegetables, breakfast cereals or red meat.

Zinc

Elderly bodies find it difficult to assimilate zinc. Zinc helps the body use protein and
carbohydrates. It also helps hasten wound healing. Take fish, poultry, and meat in order to satisfy the zinc requirements of your body.

Calcium

When people age, they hardly get enough of calcium. The elderly require at least 800 milligrams (mg) of calcium per day according to the recommended energy and nutrient intakes (RENI) for Filipinos.

Many of the older persons avoid drinking milk out of fear that it might upset their digestive processes. If a person is averse to milk, one could use non-fat milk powder instead of milk. Calcium can also be obtained from foods such as low-fat cheese, dried fish especially if eaten with bones (dilis, bia, tabios, ayungin) malunggay, saluyot, kintsay, mustasa, kalabasa.

Vitamin B12

Cobalamin or vitamin B12 facilitates maturation of red blood cells. It also protects the “myelin,” the fatty material that covers the nerves and enables one to transmit electrical impulses (messages) between nerve cells. Vitamin B12 is usually absorbed by an intrinsic factor in the stomach. Many of the elderly suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency because they suffer from atrophic gastritis, a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the walls of the stomach, growth of bacteria, and lack of the intrinsic factor that is responsible for the absorption of this vitamin into the system.

The elderly need each of these nutrients to keep themselves healthy. The elderly should be as active as possible and maintain a balanced diet. Following the FNRI’s Daily Nutrition Guide Pyramid for Older Persons can serve as a reference. Growing older does not mean one have a reason to neglect the body. An elderly should always eat well and follow good nutrition practices to enjoy a long and healthy life.

DENR Caraga Execs form Green Multiplier Committee to transform lifestyle and habit of DENR personnel

BUTUAN CITY – The DENR top officials in Caraga Region headed by the Regional Executive Director Edilberto S. Buiser have organized the Green Multiplier Program Committee in the region in what is expected to transform the lifestyle and habit of every DENR personnel towards good environmental practices.

DENR Green Multiplier Program refers to the DENR program that aims to encourage and equip each and every member of the DENR family to pursue and advocate appropriate and sound environmental management practices in his/her workplace, home, and community.

The Green Multiplier Regional Steering Committee is chaired by the Regional Technical Director for Ecological Research and Development Services Virgilio dela Cruz.

The move is an offshoot of the order of DENR Secretary Horacio C. Ramos to every personnel to “walk the talk” the programs and projects of the DENR with commitment.

“We are expecting a new kind of DENR workforce as practicing environmentalists in their areas of influence” RED Buiser said in a statement during a recent convocation program at the DENR Regional Training Center in Butuan City.

Under the management strategy of Secretary Ramos, every personnel of the DENR shall be equipped with environmental ethics, values, commitment and responsibilities to make them effective and credible multipliers of environmentalism.

“This is a tall order for us considering the kind of image that the DENR has gone through over the past years” RED Buiser said. “This is the reason why we have organized the Green Multiplier Program in the DENR organization “he added.

He said that the DENR management is hoping the DENR image would improve dramatically as the people begin to appreciate the program.

“We are encouraging behavioral changes among DENR personnel that support environmentally friendly actions and practices at work, homes and communities through an incentive program”, RED Buiser said.

There are four major components in the DENR Green Multiplier Program which include the organizational structure, program tools, enabling mechanism and incentive components.

The program is anchored on existing DENR policies relative to environmental management such as Solid Waste Management, Good Housekeeping, Power and Water Conservation Program, Environmental Management Watch, Green Procurement Program, Air Quality Management System and the Green Army program.

“We shall equip the mindset of every DENR personnel by providing enough training on skills, tools and techniques and technologies to transform their attitudes, behavior and habits toward environmental protection goals and objective”, RED Buiser said.

He said a DENR personnel who has proven his or herself to be outstanding Green Multipliers as well as original advocates of successful community projects shall be given due rewards. (Eric F. Gallego, DENR-13/ PIA-Caraga)
