BUTUAN CITY – A total of 6,679 individuals, mostly beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or 4Ps joined the Stand Up and Fight Poverty (SUFP) campaign conducted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in coordination with the local government units and partner agencies on October 16 in all 4Ps areas in the region. The campaign is one of the activities slated in observance of the National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty (NWOEP) on October 17-23, 2009.

As one of the government agencies at the forefront in the fight against poverty, the DSWD supported the Stand Up, Fight Poverty campaign on October 16-18 led by the United Nations.

DSWD Caraga Dir. Mercedita P. Jabagat said the SUFP is a three-day global mobilization that aims to send a loud and clear message from the citizens to the world leaders and decision makers to take urgent action to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and end extreme poverty by 2015.

She also said, it hopes to break the Guinness World Record for attaining the largest number of people participating in a single event.

The anti-poverty campaign focused on four major Millennium Development Goals: MDG 1 - eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; MDG 2 – achieve universal primary education; MDG 5 – improve maternal health; MDG 6 – combat HIV/AIDS.

According to the UN, the achievement of the MDGs remains a priority on the global political and public agenda. The campaign aims to convey the urgency of attaining the MDGs and end extreme poverty by 2015.
