Magallanes celebrates Lisagan
The Magallanes National High School (MNHS) took home the grand prize and all the special awards on this year’s 8th Lisagan Festival of the Municipality of Magallanes held recently before hundreds of spectators coming from all over the province witness this annual colorful event.
Aside from the Seventy Thousand (P70,000.00) pesos major prize, MNHS also went home with the Best in Costume and the Best in Street Dancing awards besting six other contenders from the city of Butuan and from other nearby towns.
This year, the Luis Memorial Elementary School from the Municipality of RTR got the 2nd prize worth Fifty Thousand (P50,000.00) pesos, while the Thirty Thousand (P30,000.00) pesos, 3rd prize went to Calamba National High School.
“This festival is a tribute to our patron saint Nuestra SeΓ±ora del Rosario, known for her miraculous healing power,” Magallanes Mayor Carlito C. Cumba said.
Senior SB member Leah Georgette Amodia, festival committee chair, said that Lisagan is one way to describe the Magallanes’s rich history and culture that dates back to centuries ago. “It is a religious celebration showcasing Mamanwa dances and rituals through a street dancing competition to bring more excitement to the town’s annual festivity”. Accordingly, this reenacts a miraculous healing in 1910 of a Mamanwa while dancing in front of the Blessed Virgin Mary brought to Magallanes from Las Nieves, Barcelona, Spain.
The famous Bitaug tree, its famous landmark, still standing at the heart of the town is already 500 years old, a lone witness to the primitive people that lived in the town centuries ago. Other equally famous landmark in the city proper is the Magellan Marker erected during the time of Spanish District Gov. Jose Maria Carvallo in 1872, commemorating the First Mass in the Philippines.

Tandag City cops apprehend theft suspect
BUTUAN CITY (November 11) - On Monday (November 10) at 7:00 in the evening at Tandag Central Elementary School, Bag-ong Lungsod, Tandag City, two cellular phones Sony Erickson K-3001 and Nokia 2600 owned by Mark Anthony Mariano and Dorris Valencia, both 16 years old, single and delegates of Regional Press Conference of Agusan del Sur, were stolen by unidentified culprit while said cellular phones was on charge inside the room of the said school. Elements of Tandag City Police Station conducted follow-up investigation and hot pursuit operation which resulted to the recovery of said items from the possession of a certain Ivan Ajos, 20 years old, single and resident of Purok Rising Sun, Bag-ong Lungsod, Tandag City. Surigao City police officers arrest illegal drugs suspect
BUTUAN CITY (November 11) – On Monday (November 10) at 4:45 in the afternoon along Rizal corner Jimena Street , infront of DepEd, Surigao del Norte Division Office, Surigao City, elements of Provincial Anti Vice Task Force led by SPO1 Andres Corina, supported by Governor Robert Ace Smith Barbers, Provincial Governor of Surigao del Norte and under close supervision of PSSUPT David Yalong Ombao, Provincial Director, conducted buy bust operation which resulted to the arrest of the suspect who was identified as Bryan Buenaflor Baybayon, alleged pusher, 31 years old, married, jobless and a resident of Espina Street, Surigao City.
Subject was arrested for having caught in his possession and control the three sachets of suspected shabu weighing MOL 0.6 grams with street value of P3,000.00; one unit cellphone Nokia 1110; cash money amounting to P3,000.00 in different denomination, including one piece P1,000.00 bill marked money with serial number F087806. Subject person and confiscated items were brought to Surigao City Police Station for proper disposition while case is being readied for filing in court against the suspect. Subay sa SB Ordinance No. 017-2008 sa pagpanginahan ni SB Member Leah Goergette B. Amodia, I-establisar ang sisterhood or town twinning committee sa katuyuan nga adunay panagbaylo sa mga pamaagi sa lungsod nga maoy mahimo unyang sister sa lungsod sa Magallanes.
Matod pa ni SB Member Amodia dako kini unya’g ikahatag nga kalamboan sa Magallanes tungod kay mapalambo man ang matang niini sa information technology, health, agriculture, human development, trade, investments, tourism ug environmental management pinaagi sa panagbayloay og kahibalo (ideas) sa duha ka lungsod.
Kung mahinumduman, pipila na katuig karon nga ang syudad sa Cabadbaran mi establisar usab og sister city nga mao ang Makati City, ang sentro sa negosyo sa Pilipinas. Gani, pipila na ka beses mibisita si Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay sa syudad sa Cabadbaran ug maingon man usab si Cabadbaran City Mayor Dale B. Corvera ngadto sa Makati City gumikan niini nga panagsabot (understanding) ug kooperasyon tali sa duha ka syudad.
