HINATUAN, Surigao del Sur (PIA) — As the Philippines assumes a prominent role in regional cooperation as chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 2026 under the leadership of Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the Enchanted River emerges as a compelling visual identity of the country’s commitment to sustainability, cultural pride, and regional unity.
Located in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, the Enchanted River, with its crystal-clear, deep-blue waters flowing from an unseen spring, reflects more than natural beauty; it mirrors the Philippines’ vision for ASEAN: interconnected, resilient, and life-sustaining. Nestled in the coastal town of Hinatuan, the river embodies the archipelagic soul of the nation, where water binds islands, communities, and shared destinies.
Tourism figures reinforce its significance as both a national treasure and a regional showcase. In 2025, the Enchanted River welcomed 322,710 visitors, including 318,779 domestic and 3,931 foreign tourists under same-day and excursion visits. Momentum continues in 2026, with 33,531 arrivals in the first quarter alone, composed of 33,168 domestic and 363 foreign visitors, a steady indication of its growing global appeal.
Local accommodations also benefit from this influx. In 2025, 31,839 tourists stayed in nearby lodgings, including 31,465 domestic and 374 foreign guests. For the first quarter of 2026, overnight stays reached 5,508, with 5,473 domestic and 35 foreign visitors, highlighting the river’s role in sustaining community-based tourism and small enterprises.
Beyond the riverbanks, the broader tourism ecosystem thrives. Total visitor movement, including excursions from nearby attractions, reached 543,934 in 2025, with 538,506 domestic and 5,428 foreign visitors. In the first quarter of 2026, arrivals climbed to 115,394, including 113,849 domestic and 1,545 foreign visitors, reinforcing Surigao del Sur’s position as an emerging eco-tourism hub in Mindanao.
For Surigaonons, the Enchanted River is more than a destination, as it is a living emblem of environmental stewardship. Community-led conservation, regulated tourism practices, and sustained environmental efforts reflect the same principles that the Philippines advances in ASEAN: a balance between development and preservation, and growth anchored in responsibility.
As ASEAN chair, the Philippines highlights destinations like the Hinatuan Enchanted River not only as tourist sites but as narratives of shared heritage. The river’s seamless flow echoes the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ collective journey, diverse nations moving forward together, guided by cooperation and mutual respect.
In this light, the Enchanted River becomes more than a scenic attraction – it turns into a symbol of how nature can define identity, inspire policy, and connect nations. As ASEAN looks toward a future of inclusive and sustainable growth, Surigao del Sur offers its own message: that even from the quiet depths of a hidden river, a powerful story of unity can emerge.
