Maagang Pamasko: Dinagat Islands fisherfolk receive rice from PCG

By Renelle L. Escuadro

BUTUAN CITY (PIA) — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), through its Tubajon sub-station in Dinagat Islands province, distributed rice to hard-working fishermen while catching fish or collecting marine products on December 20.

Dinagat Islands Station Commander Mark Rudolf G. Garcia shared that the rice distribution initiative is part of the PCG’s program ‘Maagang Pamasko,’ meaning early Christmas gift-giving.

Fishermen from Barangays San Vicente, Sta. Cruz, San Roque, and Roxas in the municipality of Tubajon each received five kilos of rice.

“The act is part of the Philippine Coast Guard’s annual Maagang Pamasko program, which aims to bring early holiday cheer to communities in need,” Garcia said. “As the holiday season approaches, this kind of program reminds us that care, generosity, and community spirit can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who sustain our coastal heritage.”

For Tubajon Sub-Station Commander Ronie E. Dulpina, this gesture is more than just a gift. “For many coastal families whose livelihoods depend on the sea, this is a tangible expression of support and solidarity.”

“Through this activity, the coast guardians in Tubajon not only provide essential assistance, but they also reinforce the PCG’s commitment to humanitarian service, ensuring that even the most remote fishing communities feel valued and remembered during the holiday season,” he added.

Pedro, one of the beneficiaries, expressed surprise and gratitude to PCG. “My purpose is to catch fish, but I also have rice, making our meal complete.”

“Thank you, PCG, for these 5 kilos of rice. This will help me feed my family, who are waiting for me for food,” Pedro added. “Indeed, the government sees our tireless diligence to bring fresh catch and food to our families and communities.”

The Philippine Coast Guard is the country’s steadfast sentinel at sea. It is mandated to guard our shores, protect the people, and ensure that the promise of safety and sovereignty reaches even the farthest island of the country. (RLE, PIA Dinagat Islands with a report from PCG Dinagat Islands)
