New school building in Tandag City erases class-shifting scheme

By Nida Grace P. Barcena

TANDAG CITY (PIA)—The recent turnover of a new four-classroom, one-storey school building to Pangi Elementary School in Tandag City addresses overcrowding and allows 107 learners from Grades I to IV to benefit from full-day sessions and eliminating class shifting.

This school building is a concrete response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s commitment to strengthen basic education infrastructure under the Bagong Pilipinas agenda.

The Department of Education – Tandag City Division, under the leadership of Schools Division Superintendent Gregoria T. Su, reaffirmed its commitment to addressing classroom shortages using data from the National School Building Inventory (NSBI), a critical tool in determining infrastructure needs across schools.

She said, “As of July 2025, the division still faces a backlog of 166 classrooms, underscoring the urgency for continued investments in education facilities.”

“However, with this building, it eliminated class shifting in Pangi Elementary School. It’s a major win not just for the learners, but also for our hardworking teachers and supportive parents,” she added.

Meanwhile, Congressional Representative Romeo S. Momo Sr. of Surigao del Sur’s 1st District highlighted the power of synergy between government sectors. “This is more than just a building. It’s proof of what we can accomplish when the national government, local leaders, and the education sector work hand in hand, ensuring no learner is left behind.”

“More than an infrastructure investment, this project embodies collaborative governance, localized planning, and inclusive education delivery, pillars that define the transformational roadmap of Bagong Pilipinas,” he added.

Funded under the 2024 Basic Education Facilities Fund (BEFF) with a total cost of P10.3 million, the new school building was implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Surigao del Sur 1st District Engineering Office (SDS1 DEO) led by District Engineer Ruel B. Bantugan. (NGPB, PIA Surigao del Sur)
