LGU Butuan spearheads a cleanup drive

By Mariesh F. Celedeña

BUTUAN CITY (PIA) – The city government of Butuan spearheaded a citywide cleanup drive dubbed “Ato Ini Limpyohan Ta,” on July 26.

The activity which meant, “This is ours, let us clean it together,” was conducted in line with the month-long celebration of the 75th Adlaw Hong Butuan on August 2, 2025.

This initiative was participated by all the 86 barangays of the city, together with the national and local government offices and civil society organizations, promoting environmental consciousness and community involvement of the Butuanons in keeping the city clean, green, and resilient.

In addition, it also promoted a sense of environmental responsibility and volunteerism among the Butuanons.

“This is not just an activity and a preparation to the celebration of Adlaw Hong Butuan or simply for aesthetic value. What we want to inculcate in the minds and hearts of the Butuanons is that cleanliness is ownership and a shared value.  Cleanliness is our collective endeavor, a collective commitment and taking pride in our environment,” said City Mayor Lawrence Lemuel H. Fortun.

The activity reminded every Butuanon to be responsible in maintaining the city’s cleanliness – not just a responsibility of the city government, but of all the constituents.

To reinforce this advocacy, Mayor Fortun vowed to strengthen the environmental protection efforts by minimizing waste generation in government operations of the city, including ban of use of single-use plastics in all meetings and activities in the entire premise of the city hall.

He urged all the officials and personnel of the city to lead by example by bringing their own reusable tumblers and adopting more sustainable practices that reduce wastes and plastic pollution.

“Every piece of trash we pick, every hand who helps, and every voice who supports this cause is a reflection of our shared commitment to protect our environment and our hope for future generations,” underscored Atty. Glenn C. Carampatana, city councilor. “When we come together with a purpose, we build not just a cleaner city, but a stronger and united community.”

“Ato Ini, Limpyohan Ta” is a significant step toward making environmental protection a way of life for all Butuanons. (MFC, PIA Butuan City)
