SK leads recycling of election materials in Dinagat Islands
By Renelle L Escuadro
BUTUAN CITY (PIA) – Kim Valeri A. Tampon, Sangguniang Kabataan Federation president in the town of San Jose, Dinagat Islands, encouraged all candidates of the recently concluded national and local elections in the province to turnover their election-related materials such as tarpaulins, posters and flyers to the federation for recycling.
The young
leaders made the announcement to inform all candidates, winners and losers, of
their ongoing removal and collection of the said waste materials, in
partnership with the Philippine National Police – San Jose Municipal Police
Station and other youth organizations such as the Boy Scout of the Philippines
of Don Ruben E. Ecleo Sr. Memorial National High School and the Kabataan Kontra
Droga at Terorismo (KKDAT).
Tampo
said, “As fulfillment of the social and environmental responsibility of the SK
Federation and our partners, we are helping the candidates to have a convenient
way to dispose of their tarpaulin and accelerate the removal of election-related
materials in the poster areas in the province.”
“Tarpaulin
lasts up to seven years in normal use,” he added as he shared that unlike
before, tarpaulins were just thrown to the garbage, posing a challenge to waste
management since the materials are not easily biodegradable.
He also
invited more tailoring shops and local entrepreneurs to coordinate with the
group for an efficient recycling of the election-related materials and
transforming them to useable items like eco-bags, sacks, pillows, cloth, among
others. Posters, on the other hand, can be a good source of toilet and
tissue paper, napkins, corrugated cardboard and boxes.
Meanwhile, the initiative is a proactive response of the SK Federation to the call of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to remove the campaign materials of candidates and partylist until May 17, five days after the election day, as mandated by Section 30 of COMELEC Resolution No. 11086 or the rules and regulations implementing Fair Elections Act for the May 2025 elections and Bangsamoro parliamentary elections.
