DOST aids local recycling business in Tandag City

By Nida Grace P. Barcena

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the Provincial Science and Technology Office in Surigao del Sur, will be helping a local recycling enterprise improve its capability to recycle waste materials in Tandag City.

DOST approved the business upgrading proposal of Renz Junk Shop under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).

The business venture is owned and managed by Reynaldo Pegarro.

"With the MOA signing, I proposed the rebar straightening machine and plasma cutter. Hopefully the funds will be released on time so I can proceed with the expansion and serve more clients in the city and nearby areas," Pegarro said.

“Small and new junk shop vendors and even locals will no longer travel to nearby or other areas in the region to sell their recyclables, as we will have a competitive junk shop in town that is equipped with the latest machine to better serve them,” he added.

PSTO-SDS Provincial Director Caressa Leanne Lim explained that the signing of SETUP MOA by and between the MSME and DOST indicated that their proposed project for technology upgrading for their business has been approved.

SETUP is a flagship program of the DOST that provides technical and financial assistance to MSMEs in adopting innovative technologies for improved operations and increased productivity.

“Through SETUP, MSMEs can access a wide range of support services, including equipment acquisition and upgrading, consultancy services, and skills training, empowering them to enhance their business operations and competitiveness,” the director noted. (NGPB/ PIA-Surigao del Sur)
